A new way to display numbers, without a screen or lights

Modulus is a new visual system of displaying digits using a single shape. The same red shape is used for the top and bottom half of each digit, and rotates independently to line up with each other at different marks to reveal hidden numbers.
All ideation, design, fabrication, and assembly work was done by me.
The goal with Modulus was to create a new way to display numbers using physical components instead of a digital screen. A way to show all numbers from the simplest geometric shape possible.
Modulus was also in part an engineering challenge, to bring my idea to life in a physical form that is easy to interact with as a product, the current one works as a single digit countdown timer. The user can turn the knob to the number they would like to set their timer to, then press a button on the side of the knob to being the countdown.
Skills used:
- 3D Modeling
- 3D Printing
- Vector Design
- Laser Cutting
- Tolerance and fit testing
- Integrating electronics
- Arduino
- Circuits
The body and face panels are all made of laser cut acrylic.
The knob and all internal electric component mounting hardware is 3D printed.
The electronics are all done through a knob, an Arduino, and 2 stepper motors.
Currently working on creating a larger four digit wall clock version.
